Welcome Little One.
There is nothing quite like those first hours after bringing your baby earthside—the quiet wonder, the tiny stretches, and the way time seems to stand still as you soak in every new detail. As a Grand Rapids newborn photographer, I get to witness these sacred moments, and there’s no session more raw and heartfelt than a Fresh 48.
Fresh 48 newborn portraits take place within the first two days of your baby’s life, typically at the hospital or birth center, before you’ve even made it home. These sessions are all about capturing the genuine, unscripted emotions that fill the room in those early hours—joy, relief, amazement, and the overwhelming love that’s hard to put into words.

Why Fresh 48 Sessions Are So Incredible
This isn’t about perfectly posed newborn photos (though those are beautiful, too). A Fresh 48 session is real life. It’s the sweet, sleepy snuggles between mom and baby. It’s big siblings curiously checking out their new family member, sometimes with wide eyes and tentative hands. It’s dad holding his tiny newborn, completely in awe. These moments are fleeting, and having them preserved forever is priceless.
One of my favorite parts of this Fresh 48 session was seeing big sister meet her baby brother for the first time. There was a mixture of curiosity and tenderness that made my heart melt. And seeing mom and dad both completely immersed in their love bubble? It was magic. Baby Maverick was wide-eyed for a bit, then settled into the deepest, coziest sleep, swaddled up tight. Just perfect.
What to Bring for Your Fresh 48 Newborn Portraits
While the focus of a Fresh 48 is simplicity and connection, here are a few things I recommend bringing along to make the portraits even more meaningful:
• Swaddles and blankets: Choose one with a soft, neutral tone or something meaningful to your family. Baby Maverick was wrapped in a cozy, earthy swaddle that perfectly complemented the warmth of their hospital room.
• A personalized name sign or announcement card: These are such a sweet detail to include in your baby’s bassinet photos. I loved capturing Mavrick’s wooden name disc with his birth stats—what a special keepsake!
• Neutral clothing for parents and siblings: Soft, neutral colors keep the focus on your baby and create a calm, cohesive look. Light grays, creams, and gentle textures photograph beautifully in hospital light.
• A special hat or headband for baby: Hospitals usually provide standard caps, but bringing your own adds a personal touch.
• Sentimental items: A handmade quilt, a family heirloom, or a favorite stuffed animal can add even more meaning to your session.
Preserve These Precious Moments
Your baby will only be this tiny for a moment. In a blur of feedings, diaper changes, and settling in at home, it’s easy to forget the small things—the hospital bracelet on their wrist, their tiny toes peeking from the swaddle, or how they fit perfectly in your arms. As a Grand Rapids newborn photographer specializing in fresh 48 newborn portraits, it’s my honor to document these once-in-a-lifetime moments for families like yours.
